Forte Music School: 5 Years and Running!

Well, technically, Forte Music School has been open a bit more than that, however, the end of this semester marks 5 years in our current "semester system". The last 5 years have seen a lot of fun improvements, changes and continued attention to high quality music education. I recently had a fun reminder of just exactly what that means while transferring files to a new computer the other day. I realized that I had over 23,000 student song files. Everything from short 3 note pieces to full sonatas. 23,000 songs created by the over 350 students I personally have had the pleasure of working with over the last 5 years. In total we have had over 20 teachers and staff work with us and well over 1500 students have studied here. I want to send out a big thank you to you all and I have a feeling that we here at Forte are just getting started.

-Eric Nordin
Director

A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/FOUNDER:

Five years ago, Forte came into existence when we dared to asked this question: "what would happen if we didn't just focus on giving our students a "good music education," but challenged them to record their pieces, change the sounds, add drums, make up other parts to go with them and basically let their creativity run wild?  And if they did this week after week, what in the world might these students be like after five years, 10 years, etc.?" We now have our first glimpse -- and the results are thrilling. Studying and learning over the last five years in our experimental musical incubator, this group of 49 students are not only solid musicians, but they also exude an incredible diversity of creativity and individuality. And we can't wait to release the next round of musical geniuses into the world: we have a feeling that this is just the beginning.......

Many Hats Collaboration
Eric Nordin: Music Director/Composer
for bold new original musical this summer

"Find Me Beside You"

Many Hats Collaboration is currently developing the original rock musical “Find Me Beside You,” a visual and aural feast depicting a young man's coming of age in 1960s Ireland. "Find Me Beside You" is a pilgrimage through one of rock's most acclaimed albums through the eyes of fictional characters.

A ballerina dancing through a fallen city. Astral projection, a drag queen, and falling in love with your best friend's younger sister. Joyful innocence during The Troubles and ghosts following a riot. Misguided romantic pursuits are shot through with mystery as "Find Me Beside You" traverses a young man’s blundering first steps toward becoming a man, and the redemption he ultimately seeks.

“Find Me Beside You” runs August 4-14 on the Arena Stage of Theatre! Theater!

The creative team of "Find Me Beside You" is Jessica Wallenfels Director/Choreographer, Eric Nordin Director/Composer/Arranger, Performer Elizabeth Klinger and Playwright Lava Alapai. The design team includes Chris Rousseau, Don Crossley, kollodi and Annalise Albright.

"Find Me Beside You" is generously supported by the Regional Arts and Culture Council, the Puffin Foundation, the Heathman Hotel, the Oregonian and individual sponsors.

This independent theater production was not created, endorsed, or authorized by Van Morrison or his representatives, but is an original creation of Many Hats Collaboration, an Oregon nonprofit corporation.

Eric Nordin: Music Director / Pianist
"Songs For A New World" by Jason Robert Brown

June 18-July 3, 2010 @ the Milagro Theatre

Miracle Theatre Group and Staged! Portland’s Musical Theatre Series are pleased to announce a collaborative production of "Songs for a New World".

In this pop/rock musical revue from Jason Robert Brown ("Parade" and "The Last Five Years"), a startling array of characters seek the American dream through laughter, love, companionship, adventure and passion. Brown transports his audience from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge 57 stories above Fifth Avenue; from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams — and a soulless marriage. Hard choices and startling discoveries drive the songs and stories of this Off-Broadway hit, filled with a blend of savvy showmanship and exciting contemporary sounds.

"Songs for a New World" plays June 18-July 3, 2010 at the Milagro Theatre (525 SE Stark St., Portland). Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. from June 18-July 3. Tickets are $17-$22 ($13 for students/seniors) when purchased in advance; $24-$29 ($19 for students/seniors) when purchased at the door (in other words, you save as much as $7 when buying ahead of time). Tickets can be purchased by calling 503-236-7253 or online HERE

ARTWORK ON THE STUDENT BLOG

Our music computer lab has many fun and informative music games for our students to use before or after their lesson. However, occasionally, some of them move through all of the games and/or just want a bit of a break from them. So instead, we've found, that a number of our students are drawing amazing works of art in the paint program. There were so many great ones, that we thought it would be fun to share them with you. So we've posted them on our student blog. CLICK HERE to see them for yourself. You might even see your OWN work of art up there.
